A New Mexico Treasure
The Luna Otero Mansion, one of the country’s premier historic properties, is a pillar of New Mexico’s history and transformation. In 1881, the Mansion, the third home of the Luna - Otero families, was a gift from the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway in exchange for the right of way through their extensive land grant holdings. The magnificent structure was built for Don Antonio Jose and Isabella Baca, but because of Don Antonio’s untimely death, was first occupied by his eldest son, Tranquilino. Don Solomon Luna, Don Tranquilino’s younger brother, was one of the Mansion’s most celebrated residents.
The family of Don Eduardo Otero, a nephew of Don Solomon Luna, last occupied it residentially. In 1920, Josefita “Pepe” Manderfield Otero, wife of Don Eduardo, renaissance woman, grande dame, was responsible for the most significant additions to the property, whereby the current Southern Colonial style evolved.
In 1976, the neglected property was restored into a fine dining establishment. Physical and spiritual memories flourish these walls and furnishings. It stands as a crown jewel of New Mexico, a monument to history that has been featured in historical and embellished accounts.
A legacy continued and history preserved.
Pedro and Hortencia Torres, founders of Teofilo’s Restaurante, transformed the historical Whitwer Home into a New Mexican restaurant that continues to serve its family recipes after 40 years. The family recognized the incredible historical value of the Luna Mansion across the street from their restaurant. Together they bought it, restoring and preserving this significant piece of Valencia County’s history. Reopened in 2008 as a steakhouse, the Luna Mansion’s spirit was kept alive, welcoming the community to dine within the historical walls until 2020.
A New Beginning…
We are thrilled and honored to reopen the Luna Mansion as New Mexico’s newest historical Landmark Event Venue, a gathering place for celebrating and creating landmark moments. One must step through its doors to feel the magic of the Mansion’s soul, an experience that is unforgettable.
